Of all the facial cosmetic surgeries, eyelid surgery - also known as blepharoplasty, when excess fatty deposits are removed from aging lids - is one of the fastest, most effective procedures performed to restore a youthful, attentive look to one's appearance.
The incisions are very small and virtually invisible after recovery; operation time is quick; and the countenance appears more awake and young when the eyelids are not wrinkled and drooping.
What can you expect from eyelid surgery? Correction of the components causing aged eyelids. The brow pushing down may have created droop; constant blinking and gravity may have caused wrinkles and crow's feet around the eyes; and time itself will have affected your eyelids muscles, causing sagging and redundant skin. During blepharoplasty, excess skin is removed; fatty deposits are removed; and skin in trimmed and re-tightened to eliminate sag and wrinkles.
Typically, these things are necessary to correct aging in the upper eye lid. If your lower lid is experiencing the signs of aging, it may be minimal and possibly corrected through a laser resurfacing treatment.
Also, if the brow is extremely heavy or low - this is more common in males - the patient may require a brow lift. Otherwise, the weight of the brow will continue to push downward, negating the intended long-term results of the eyelid surgery.
Healing after eyelid surgery varies among patients, and each doctor will have a very specific set of rules and activity restrictions that you should follow without fail. But here are some of the basic things you can expect following blepharoplasty and tips for recovery.
Blurry vision, localized pain, tenderness and swelling are common; but don't worry, these are temporary and manageable side effects. Talk with your cosmetic surgeon about what types of pain management medications are best for you.
As healing progresses, you will be required to use a cream or eye drop most likely. These not only encourage proper healing, they will alleviate burning, itching and reduce swelling. Keep a large pair of sunglasses nearby because sensitivity to light will likely occur. Also, sleep with your head elevated during the initial period of recovery to discourage swelling. Ice and cold compresses can help with puffiness, as well.
Most patients can resume normal, daily activities after a week to ten days, but it may take up to a few weeks or months for the full results to be clear. Some bruising and redness will likely be the longest, lingering side effects of eyelid surgery.
