As you know, I have oily skin.
Very oily skin. And my lids are as oily as the rest of my face. I therefore never have been a fan of cream eyeshadow that usually would crease by the time I got out of the bathroom in the morning. I remember a few times putting on my cream eyeshadow, finding it beautiful not checking up on my face again only to get back home to see that what was left of my eyeshadow was pretty much dripping on the corner of my eyes. Yes, gross.
Anyway, I recently found out about eyeshadow bases. I had never heard of an eyelid primer in my life before. But, as you can imagine, I discovered this magical product recently in my Internet research and watching youtube makeup tutorials. You can only imagine how excited I was to try one so I went on an web search expedition and found out about:
- ELF’s Eyelid Primer,
- Urban Decay’s primer potion,
- L’Oréal’s De-crease,
- Nyx’s Eyeshadow Base,
- Nyx’s Jumbo Eye Pencils (as used here),
- Too Faced’s Shadow Insurance,
- Nars’s Pro Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base and
- MAC’s Paint Pots.
How did I choose? As I usually do, by reading and watching tons and tons of reviews. (Watch a great review of a few of these products here) I wasn’t impressed by the little doe-foot wand on the Nars, ELF, Urban Decay and L’Oréal’s primers and I did not like the packaging of Too Faced’s base either. Plus the reviews I had read about these products were mixed. So it was between the Nyx Base and MAC’s Paint Pot. I liked the Nyx Jumbo Pencils but actually wanted to find a base that would work with all of my eyeshadow colors…
I was really excited to use a eyeshadow primer so I had the choice between waiting for 2 weeks to get a delivery from Nyx or…walking to the nearest MAC Store…So you know who won. I got a MAC Paint Pot in Groundwork. And I do not regret this decision at all. The consistency is soft and it applies evenly and easily. The Groundwork shade is a taupey brown with a slight sheen that looks fabulous on its own but also acts as a great base for other colors. Making any color you put on top of it pop more and, even better, stay put all day. So, even though it is not only a Eyeshadow base it works perfectly as one. My eyeshadow stays put for a full day of work and starts to very slightly crease at the beginning of the evening so I honestly believe that it is worth using a base and that the Paint Pot works really well.
A few days after starting to use my brand new eyeshadow base I cam across a new product from Maybelline: the Color Tattoo 24HR Cream Gel Eyeshadow. Before trying the Paint Pot I would never have even come close to this product, but I was more than happy to try it with my newly acquired confidence in my eyelids.
So, what’s all the fuss about? Here’s what Maybelline has to say about the product:

I did not believe the 24 HR claim but I do have to admit, it does stay put. I actually have used these without any eyeshadow primer and it did not crease. I got two colors: Fierce and Tangy and Pomegranate Punk. I am simply in love with both colors and at a 7.99$ price, I will definitely be getting more of them.
The consistency is very similar to the Paint Pots and they can be used as bases as well as you can layer any similar color powder eyeshadow on top and blend to make it interesting.
I will be buying more of these, try them, they’re worth it.
